What a....blessing
So, in the LDS faith, babies are blessed rather than baptized, which does not take place until the age of 8. It is believed that at the age of 8, a child is at the age of accountability. Before age 8 it is said that "little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin. And … little children need no repentance, neither baptism. Behold, baptism is unto repentance … unto the remission of sins."
Therefore a blessing is offered upon the child in the first few months of their lives. Dan has given the blessings to both of our children and they both have been very special experiences for us. To me, blessing a child is a way of giving thanks to the Lord for this life he gave us to nurture. It is a time to welcome this brand new spirit into our family and bless them with the protection of the love of the Lord and those here on earth. And to give them a name and pronounce it unto the Lord.
We recently just gave Mackenzie a blessing on June 31st while we were at the Calley family reunion in Vail, Co. and it was beautiful! I guess you could say that traditionally a baby blessing is given on a Sunday in a chapel, but given the circumstance of wanting all of our family there, we gave Mackenzie her blessing outside in a serene garden with the backdrop of a pond and the majestic mountains. It was like John baptizing Jesus in the river of Jordan or a profound moment in a sacred grove. I have never felt more connected and overcome with the spirit. I don't know if it was the environment, or the presence of just our family, but I felt like time had stopped and all the birds, fish, Angels, and mostly Heavenly Father were listening. It was perfect....
